Learn how to read your routes and look for tell-tale signs of past events. Anytime there is a huge avalanche, you hear about it on the news. The news stories do a good job of showing how devastating and unforgiving this natural disaster can be. But what a lot of people don't know is that the much smaller avalanches can kill you just as easily as the big ones. Reading your routes takes practice and is about experience above anything else. It's also not the easiest skill to acquire either, but it's not something you should ignore at all. Take the time to study the terrain, looking for the sometimes hard to detect variations. You can often spot potential hazards as well as recognize signs of past damage to trees, etc. Back country skiing has its own unique dangers and challenges. Many people are switching to rechargeable AA or AAA batteries to avoid finding themselves in a situation without batteries. More and more electronics are taking AAA batteries because they are becoming smaller. There is a battery converter that sizes your AAA up to AA size. It's much like an adapter that will make it possible to charge both sizes. Of course you'll use it with your automobile for charging, but it is most handy to have if you're stuck in a remote location.

It is also a good idea to devise a quick release system for your snowboard. It will require some slight modifications to be made to your plate binding, though. Many snowboarders highly recommend making the modifications for various reasons. There can be all kinds of different situations in which you would want to jettison your board. You should be able to easily find plans for making the modifications which aren't that difficult. If you'd rather not do it yourself, you can probably find a board shop that will do it for you.
